Coudoulet de Beaucastel is the second wine of Château de Beaucastel, the renowned domaine of the Perrin family in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. This rich Côtes du Rhône is a selection of wines from Château de Beaucastel and from the adjoining Cotes du Rhone Coudoulet vineyards. These vineyards are located east of Route National No. 7, the highway which forms the boundary between the Côtes du Rhône and Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellations at Beaucastel. The Coudoulet vineyards total 66 acres of Côtes du Rhône which are geologically identical to the vineyards at Château de Beaucastel: a layer of marine limestone-clay of the Miocene Period, covered by an Alpine deposit of smooth stones, or "galets", washed down by the Rhone River eons ago. The "galets" trap the heat of the day and radiate it back to the vines during the night, at the same time preventing the evaporation of moisture from the soil. The average age of the vines is 30 years. Organic culture is practiced in the Coudoulet vineyards, as it is at Beaucastel. No chemical fertilizers, systemic pesticides or herbicides are used, and only the traditional copper sulfate spray is permitted. Organic compost of grape pumice and sheep manure enriches the soil. Average yields over the past five years have been 39.8 hectoliters per hectare from the Coudoulet vineyards.
The Coudoulet de Beaucastel Rouge is made from Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah and Cinsault. Each varietal is harvested separately, by hand, to assure optimum maturity and vinified separately to maintain its own unique character.
