The 2005 vintage in Columbia River region was an outstanding vintage, producing a low crop of highly concentrated, beautifully balanced Merlot grapes. Following a mild, dry winter, budbreak and bloom set occurred early. Spring rains naturally thinned the crop for smaller cluster size. Summer developed beautifully with temperatures ranging from 80-85 degrees which allowed the grapes to grow at a consistent rate. After a short hot spell in August, temperatures cooled into September enabling grapes extended hang time to develop even ripeness and excellent balance. Our Merlot grapes were picked at their peak with bright fresh cherry flavors and well-structured tannins. Refined elegance marks Canoe Ridge's 2005 Merlot. Opening with heady aromas of cherry, blackberry and a roasted coffee bean, the wine’s bold greeting exposes the nature of its unique origin. Across the palate, supple flavors of forest berry and plum fluidly move in balance with a bright acidity and understated spiciness. Well-integrated tannins hold through for a vibrant, lingering finish, complimenting robust pasta dishes, herb-stuffed chicken breast, or marinated pork loin. |
