Foley’s 2006 vintage is a virtual amalgam of all of their Pinot blocks, and their seven clones. Therefore, it speaks beautifully about the properties of their Rancho Santa Rosa in totality, and of the larger Santa Rita Hills AVA. The steep hillside vineyards were hand-picked as they ripened, from late September through the end of October. Using traditional Pinot Noir vinification, upon arrival at the winery, the grapes were de-stemmed, and transferred in open top fermenters where they were inoculated for fermentation. During the course of fermentation, the caps were punched down three times daily, capturing as much character from the grapes as possible. Upon completion of fermentation, the new wine was gently moved to small French oak barrels (25% new) for aging. After twelve months in oak, the wine was carefully pulled from barrel, gently given a polish filtration and bottled.
Deep garnet in color with purple highlights, the Rancho Santa Rosa Pinot Noir has aromas of black cherry, blackberry and blueberry. There are also earth notes of mushroom, black tea and smoked meats. There is some tannin, but it is well integrated in this plump, mouth-filling wine. Drink now, or hang onto it for five to ten years, if you prefer.
