After early budbreak, the growing season that followed was cool and wet. From October to June, it was the wettest growing season on record. The extra ground moisture resulted in greater vine vigor and a larger crop than normal. Since the summer was relatively cool with no heat spikes, the warm days and cool nights allowed the grapes to ripen slowly and reach optimum flavor and acid maturity. As a result, 2005 vintage wines are likely to continue to develop more complex aromas and flavors in the bottle.

The 2005 Carneros Chardonnay opens with inviting aromas of fig, white peach, ginger and orange blossom as flavors of pineapple, Meyer lemon zest and vanilla bean grace the palate. With creamy texture and a lingering finish of citrus and pears, this wine showcases the Carneros region. A light touch of oak combined with balanced acidity accentuate the complexity of this Chardonnay.

Serve this Chardonnay alongside poached sea bass with orange zest or seared scallops together with a thin slice of orange and overtop a layer of pork belly. For dessert, try it with a vanilla crème brûlée to accentuate the vanilla and butterscotch character in the wine.
