Rioja is quite unique in that it lies at the convergence of three main climatic zones. In
the northern part of the region, the cold winds of the Pyrenees can be felt which can be
tasted in the wines. In the eastern reaches of the zone, a temperate Mediterranean influence
is present. And in the southern and western zones of Rioja, the dry, hot winds
of Castilla help to produce wines that are not far removed from Ribera del Duero. The
soil is primarily made up of clay and limestone.
