Girard Zinfandel is an interesting blend of two head trained old vine vineyards book-ending the Napa Valley. Roughly half the wine is from the highest elevation vineyard planted in the Napa Valley on the top of Mt. Vaca in the southeast corner of Napa. The vineyard is 2,750 in elevation, nearly 1,000 feet higher than the top of Atlas Peak. The other vineyard is from the northwest corner of Napa valley from an east facing hillside vineyard.

The 2006 vintage is full-bodied yet silky smooth wine, and presents a dark cherry-red color. The aromas and palate profile includes dark cherries, lush blueberries and ripe plums. Spices, cedar and anise round out the aroma profile. Thanks to extended, cold maceration, the tannins are quite soft and well integrated. The blend is 77% Zinfandel and 23% Mixed Blacks Rhone Blend.

"Tart and smoky, with black cherry and espresso aromas and focused blackberry and spice flavors. Drink now through 2012. 3,400 cases made. TF" -Rated 88, Wine Spectator

"So classically structured and elegant, it might almost be a Bordeaux red variety instead of Zinfandel, except for the black pepper. Brings Napa-esque control and tannins to the blackberries, currants and chocolate, and should develop for up to 6 years. S.H. (11/1/2008)" -Rated 89, Wine Enthusiast

"High in richness and reasonably gifted with youthfully outgoing fruitiness, this full-bodied wine makes attractive first impressions in both nose and flavor, and only the obvious heat welling up at the finish holds it back from higher ratings. Still, if you favor the bigger side of Zin yet want a fair dollop of fruit, you will find lots to like in this wine." -Rated 89, Connoisseur's Guide to California Wines
