With a 20-year career crafting great red wines at some of Sonoma and Napa Valley’s leading wineries, Horse Play winemaker Melissa Bates knows how to tame a rambunctious young red. Utilizing traditional and cutting-edge artisan winemaking techniques Melissa fashions Rollicking Red with robust flavors balanced by silky tannins. Five months aging in French and American oak further refined this distinctive red blend.
They had great fun in the winery making Rollicking Red. Wild horses don’t play by the rules so they didn’t either. The blended some Syrah (a bit of a wild beast itself) with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and – Voila! – Rollicking Red. Bright aromas of cherries, currants, blackberries and vanilla fill the nose, with subtle roasted and toasty oak tones adding a savory note. On the mouthfilling palate, rich cherry, cassis and spice flavors are plush and balanced, leading to a long, fruitful finish. This is a red to savor with grilled and barbecued meats, hearty pastas and flavorful cheeses.
