Full bodied and richly textured, this cabernet displays intense aromas and flavors of blackberry, cassis, earth, and black olive, with a smooth, lingering finish. Structured to be age-worthy, it is layered with the addition of merlot, which not only adds complexity, it also serves to round out the mid-palate and soften the abundant ripe tannins just enough to make this a big wine that you can enjoy now. However, if you have access to a cool dark place, lay some bottles of this Reserve down for up to ten years, and patience will reward you as well!
Founded by wine industry pioneer, Rod Strong, in 1959, Rodney Strong Vineyards is now owned by the Kleins, a farming-based family that prides itself on land stewardship and a relentless push for superior wine quality from Sonoma County. After purchasing the company in 1989, Tom Klein began the endeavor that today brings together excellent vineyards, the industry's finest winemaking equipment, and exceptional talent. The winery farms and sources grapes from vineyards throughout Sonoma County, focusing on Alexander Valley, Russian River Valley and Chalk Hill. Rodney Strong Vineyards is best known for its estate-bottled and vinyeard-designated wines, and is also recognized for their sustainable and Fish Friendly Farming, dedication to solar energy production and coming carbon neutral in 2009.
"The winery’s reserve Cab has been variable over the years, but this ’02 is really a very good wine that will reward cellaring. It’s luscious now, but such are the tannins, the dry balance, and the freshness of the blackberry flavors, that time in the bottle is bound to reward. Should open by the end of 2007, and drink well for the next five years. — S.H. (5/1/2007)
