Kenwood Cabernet Sauvignon Artist Series 3L 1999
mb6880108$369.31

An elegant, intensely concentrated wine with vibrant blackberry and black cherry fruit flavors. This wine exhibits rich, deep color, and hints of mint, spice and cassis.

The Wine

With a history of crafting exceptional wines, Kenwood Vineyards winemaker, Mike Lee, selected grapes for the 1999 Artist Series cuvče from the Lindholm and Montecillo Vineyards. Both vineyards are located at an elevation of about 1,400 feet on the Mayacamas mountain range, bordering the eastern side of Sonoma Valley. These prominent vineyards are known for generating low-yielding crops of less than three tons per acre, producing complex wines that exhibit a high concentration of vibrant fruit.

After harvest in mid-October, the grapes were fermented in stainless steel tanks. The lots were then aged separately in small French oak barrels for 30 months. After final blending, the 1999 Artist Series Cabernet Sauvignon spent an additional six months in French oak. The wine was further aged for eight months in the bottle before being released to the market in the fall of 2003. This Cabernet will continue to improve with bottle aging.

The Art

Rolph Scarlett, a Canadian by birth, and a jeweler and set designer by trade, produced this gouache and graphite painting in 1940, at mid-point in his life and career. Deeply moved by the early improvisations of Kandinsky, Scarlett worked in the abstract and expressionistic styles. This untitled piece demonstrates the artist’s interest in creating a “cosmic order” through the juxtaposition and ordering of color and shape against a picture plane.

"Potent cedar, tobacco, herb and fresh earth flavors along with its firm structure give this wine a Bordeaux-like personality, with currant, herb, leather and olive flavors that are rich and concentrated, but in need of short-term cellaring. Drink now through 2012. 3,700 cases made. –JL" - Rated 87, Wine Spectator

"The grapes come from high mountain vineyards that yield small berries. This wine is young, tough and tannic. It’s not one of your softly opulent ’99s that immediately seduces. There is a deep core of blackberry, cherry and cassis fruit and a lush overlay of oak. This 25th vintage of Artist Series is a serious cellar candidate. Best after 2008. — S.H.
