Neil Empson was the first to export Chardonnay from Italy in 1976, and launched Bollini Chardonnay in 1982. Small growers in the Trentino appellation supply fruit which is vinified by consulting oenologist Franco Bernabei, as are all the Trentino wines. Bollini Chardonnay Barricato 40, first released in 1997, is a neo interpretation of northeastern Italian Chardonnay. It is clean and fresh, with crisp, classic varietal character and a distinctive touch of vanilla lent by 40% of the blend being aged in "barriques," or small barrels.
