Early Times Mint Julep Cocktail has been the "The Official Mint Julep of the Kentucky Derby®" for over two decades. During this year's Kentucky Derby week, more than 120,000 Early Times Mint Juleps are expected to be served at Churchill Downs®. Over the past 26 years, more than 2.5 million Early Times Mint Juleps have been served between Kentucky Oaks® and Derby Days at Churchill Downs.
The thrill of the Kentucky Derby is captured in a limited-edition Early Times Mint Julep artist bottle. This year’s bottle features the work of Celeste Susany, one of the nation’s premier equine painters. The painting is titled “The Derby Dance”, and this is the 13th time Celeste’s work has graced the bottle.
The Mint Julep has always been a symbol of Kentucky's rich heritage and hospitality. Perhaps General Simon Bolivar Buckner put it best when he wrote from the South Pacific during World War II: "A Mint Julep is not the product of a formula. It is a ceremony that must be performed by one possessing a true sense of the artistic, a deep reverence for the ingredients and a proper appreciation of the occasion." Many Kentuckians claim that when a Julep is done right, you can hear the angels sing. One 19th-century jurist is said to have ruled, "Who has not tasted one has lived in vain."
