With the purchase of the major portion of the original "Liebfraumilch" vineyard in 1808, Peter Joseph Valckenberg became not only the first private owner and producer of what was already a very popular wine, but also the first significant exporter of German wines.
Under the brand name of MADONNA, Valckenberg not only exports its Liebfraumilch wines, but also a range of quality wines with Prädikat up to Beerenauslese and Eiswein.
Rheinhessen, Germany’s largest wine region with its gentle rolling hills, is situated in the climatically favored large elbow formed by the Rhine river as it flows from Worms to its sweeping bend around Mainz and west to its next turn at Bingen.
Only if "Jack Frosts icy breath" will blow through the vineyards, bringing down temperatures to below 17 °Fahrenheit, an Eiswein can be produced. The frost turns the water that remains in the grapes into frozen little lumps. If such grapes are then pressed, outflows the most concentrated of essences. If the sweet, concentrated extract is matched by correspondingly high acidity, we have a wine that can be cellared for decades, continually improving in quality.
