Haut Medoc Bordeaux
Plenty of earth, berry and tobacco character. Full-bodied, with a serious amount of velvety tannins and a long, fruity finish. Best wine ever from here. Score range: 89-91 Wine Spectator Decantor 3 Stars
On the southern side of Ludon, rising above a gravelly plateau, the tourist discovers the moats, towers, conical roofs and tall trees which combine to create the beauty of the Château d'Agassac.
Local tradition has it that a latin inscription in an underground passage of the château places its construction in the 11th Century. But the history of the lords of the castle can not be traced that far. The most ancient of them, Seigneur de Gassac, lived in the second half of the 13th Century.
As the centuries went by and as the different owners came and went, the château's architecture changed, and it was in the 16th Century that the current building was erected.
Fortress but also a wine-growing estate, Agassac has always been equipped with all the necessary outbuildings for a large farm, as well as the vast wine cellars in which, combining elegance with convenience, the Domain's red wines are stored. Known at the beginning of the 20th Century under the names of Château Pomiès and Château Ludon, Agassac's wines, highly regarded in Holland, received numerous distinctions, in particular at the exhibitions in Amsterdam in 1895, Rouen in 1896 and London in 1905. Each time, the wine was awarded the distinction of the Gold Medal.
Recognized by amateurs of Bordeaux as a wine whose characteristics are its colour, mellowness and aromatic flavour, Agassac's wine is classed amongst the very good Médoc Crus Bourgeois.
Today the tradition continues. Our vast vineyards which spread across the gravelly plain and which create the treasures and the modern-day reputation of the old castle, still produce that delicately perfumed and exceptionally rich wine
Château d'Agassac today : between tradition and modernity
The Roots of Quality : the Soil, the Vine and Man.
Our vineyard, composed of 2 enclosures both placed on a gravelly plateau, is situated to the north-east of the village of Ludon. It covers 38 hectares.
The varieties of grape planted are as follows : Merlot 50%, Cabernet Sauvignon 47%, Cabernet Franc 3%.
Over the last five years, our annual production has averaged 5500 liters per hectare, which represents around 230 barrels of wine from the whole of the vineyard.
The vineyard is maintained using traditional methods and is made up mainly of old vinestocks.
This association of exceptional soil characteristics, old vinestocks in the main more than 35 years old, allied to the meticulous upkeep of the vineyard, results in the grapes that we harvest being of the highest quality
