Haut Medoc, Bordeaux

A number of southern Medoc cru bourgeois estates (this one is near Giscours) have been producing very fine wines over the last few vintages. A sleeper of the vintage, the 2000 Cambon La Pelouse is a blend of 50% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 15% Cabernet Franc. Sweet, ripe, and medium-bodied, it displays sumptuous layers of black cherry and currant fruit with subtle oak in the background. Fleshy, open-knit, and expansive, it will provide joyous drinking over its first 4-6 years of life. Rated 87-88 Robert Parker

The growth of Cambon La Pelouse, which lies between Cantemerle and Giscours on one of the highest points in Macau, bordering on Labarde and only separated from it by a country road, combines the bouquet and finesse of these latter wines with the roundness and firmness which distinguishes the good growths of Macau and Ludon. The vineyard, composed of premium grapes, Cabernets and Merlot, is planted on crests formed entirely of thick layers of enormous pebbles and loam. The area of the estate is some 60 hectares and the vineyard produces between 300 and 340 tonneaux. The growth of Cambon La Pelouse is one of the oldest in the region; its products once largely contributed both in France and abroad to the reputation of the wines from the “Païs du Médoc” (the Médoc country). Shipped to England, by the end of the 17th c. they were already fetching 400 livres per tonneau or more. Later they were shipped to Holland where the price paid for them in France was often more than was paid for the fifth growths and even some fourth growths. Following various changes of ownership, these wines were forgotten and could only be classified “Bourgeois supérieurs”, a ranking which had little to do with their long-standing reputation and their previous classification. In 1956, the vineyard became a victim of the great frost and cereal crops replaced the vines. In 1974, the Carrère family rented the land to Mr. Faure and completely replanted the vineyard. Now the name of Cambon La Pelouse has been launched once more and retrieved its position among the best.
