Margaux, Bordeaux
The finest Cantenac Brown I have ever tasted, this full-bodied, layered, concentrated, saturated purple-colored 2000 offers pure aromas and flavors of black currants, minerals, and flowers. Moderately high, but sweet tannin is found in the 25-30-second finish. Patience, however, is required because of the structured nature of this offering. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2025.
87-88 Points Robert Parker
A chewy, solid red, with cherry, tobacco and tar character. Full-bodied, thick tannins and a medium finish. Tight wine. Score range: 89-91 Wine Spectator
Cantenac-Brown is in a splendid location in the heart of the Margaux appellation. The estate is mostly situated in the commune of Cantenac, in the southern part of the appellation.
The vineyard covers an area of 50 hectares (42 hectares are entitled to the name of Margaux, and 8 hectares to that of Bordeaux). The soil is mostly gravelly. The vineyard replanting programme is working towards vines with an average age of 25-30 years. Grape varieties are as follows: 68% Cabernet-Sauvignon, 26% Merlot and 6% Cabernet-Franc.
Since 1989, the new team has set up a new way to run the vineyard, called the integrated protection of the vineyard.
The aim is to ensure an healthy harvest by reducing the use of phyto-sanitary treatments to a minimum. This means having perfect knowledge of cryptogamic diseases in order to employ with the best possible efficiency, products adapted to man and to the environment, to protect the vine against its natural predators.
The regular consultation of weather forecasts and the study of the evolution of a disease throughout the year in comparison to previous years, help them to choose the right treatment.
Their interest in nature pushed them to go back to the old ploughing techniques. This method of traditional maintenance of the soil favours its physical, chemical and biological characteristics.
Work was undertaken in the vineyard, where 18 ha were drained. Higher trellising was put in (posts and wires). allowing the well supported vegetation to grow better. The developing leaf feeds the vine and ensures a better rate of sugar in the grape.
The fertilizations are well balanced, moderate, in according to the needs of the plant and exclusively of vegetal origin.
The vine is cared for throughout the year (pruning, de-budding, sometimes the leaves are also thinned out in particularly productive years) allowing for the yields to be well mastered
