St Estephe, Bordeaux
A fat, opulently-styled effort with tannin lurking under the surface, this dark purple-colored St.-Estephe exhibits aromas of earth, blackberry and cassis fruit, licorice, dried herbs, and leather. The wine is rich on the entry, but narrows slightly, finishing with plenty of glycerin, extract, and tannin. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2018.
Rated 87-88 Robert Parker
Black licorice and plums on the nose. Medium- to full-bodied, with chewy, slightly rustic tannins and a medium, austere finish. Wait and see how it evolves. Score range: 85-88 Wine Spectator
The name Cos-Labory comes from the place-name “Caux” which means hill of stones (cailloux) and the man who owned it from 1800-1840, Monsieur Labory. Purchased in 1845 by Louis Gaspard d’Estournel, château Cos-Labory was resold in 1852 to an English banker, Mr. Charles Martyns. Today it is the property of the Audoy family. The 18-hectare vineyard lying on the crest of Cos is planted to traditional Médoc grapes: Merlot, Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet franc and Petit Verdot. After winemaking, strictly executed by Mr. Bernard Audoy himself, an œnologist who graduated from the Ins, 30 and 50% of which are renewed each year. After fining with egg-white, the whole vintage is bottled at the château. The wines produced show a lovely colour, a rich, complex nose and a structure typical of Saint-Estèphe.
