Margaux, Bordeaux

The finest d'Issan I have tasted, the 2000, a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30 Merlot (60% of the crop made it into the grand vin), exhibits a saturated purple color, and an intense bouquet of licorice, black currants, and acacia flowers. This structured, rich, medium-bodied wine has superb purity, harmony, and length. Tannic and muscular, this wine looks set to have a brilliant future. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2025. Rated 91-93 Robert Parker

Aromas of black licorice and berries. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long finish. An outstanding Margaux. Score range: 89-91 Wine Spectator

It was in these words that not so very long ago the poet Biarnez celebrated one of the oldest vineyards in Médoc. In fact its history goes back to the time when Guyenne was occupied by the English; the Ségur, d’Essenault and de Foy-Candale families all owned it before the Revolution of 1789 and after that the Duluc, the Blanchy and especially the Roy family owned it from the middle of the 19th c. up until 1920. If tradition is to be believed, it was served at the marriage of Alienor of Aquitaine to Henry Plantagenet and the wines were still being appreciated several centuries later in London in 1723 by J. Bruneval who wrote to the Prince of Wales’s cellarman saying “I have not tasted an Issan as good as this year’s.” Again, more recently, château d’Issan gained a flattering reputation by becoming the favourite wine of Emperor Franz-Joseph of Austria. The proud motto of this growth dates from that period, “Regum mensis arisque deorum” - For (or “on”) the table of kings and the altar of the gods -. Admirably situated, the estate extends across 120 hectares of which 50 are dedicated to the culture of the vine. The extremely classic grape-mix is 70% Cabernet-Sauvignon to 30% Merlot. Château d’Issan produces wines which, whilst preserving the exquisite bouquet so special to the wines of Margaux, show a great deal of similarity to the great wines of Pauillac on account of their force, their flesh and their colour. Average annual production at château d’Issan is 150 000 bottles. The company also distributes château de Candale (an Haut-Médoc) and Moulin d’Issan (a Bordeaux supérieur) each of which produces about 60 000 bottles. Classified on the list of Historic Monuments, château d’Issan is an associated member of the Académie du Vin de Bordeaux.
