Haut Medoc, Bordeaux

A sleeper of the vintage, the opaque purple-colored 2000 is the finest La Tour-Carnet I have ever tasted. This estate was recently purchased by Pape-Clement's proprietor, Bernard Magrez, who brought in famed oenologist Michel Rolland to oversee the vinification. The 2000 is a blend of 58% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon with a touch of Cabernet Franc.

An opaque purple color is accompanied by a dense, powerful, concentrated wine displaying superb ripeness, purity, and texture. A tannic, full-throttle effort, the likes of which I have never tasted from La Tour-Carnet, it requires 4-5 years of cellaring, and should keep for 16-18 years. Rated 88-90 Robert Parker

The origins of this lovely estate date back to the 13th c. Jean de Foix, lord of Candale, donated it to Sieur de Carnet, his squire, in 1427. In 1445 the seigneur de Carnet refused to rally to the King of France and was obliged to suffer a long siege in his château. Legend has it that the Beau Dumas, a companion of Joan of Arc, came in person to dislodge this recalcitrant English loyalist. From the list of famous owners we might mention Tibaud de Camin who was husband to Madeleine Eyquem de Montaigne, the sister of Michel de Montaigne who stayed at La Tour Carnet in the company of La Boëtie. In 1774, a Swedish emigrant, Mr. Luetkuns, bought the château and passed it on to his descendants. Much later, in 1962, Mr. and Mrs Lipschitz took it over and after them their children, Mr and Mrs Pelegrin, dedicated themselves to it heart and soul. At the moment Bernard Magrez continues to pursue this new regeneration of château La Tour Carnet. The reputation of this classified growth is well founded because it has the good fortune of benefiting from excellent terroir perched on a fine knoll at an altitude of 19 m. Château La-Tour-Carnet is not only remarkable for its architecture from times past, but for the renaissance of its vineyard and the success of its wines.
