St Emilion Bordeaux

My hope is that American importers will pick up on the great value offered by this lower level St.-Emilion. The 2000 Pipeau is good, although thick and tannic. A fruit bomb deluxe, it offers a sexy combination of blackberry, black raspberry, and cherry fruit, with subtle oak in the background. Medium-bodied, with silky tannin, and a layered, fat, rich personality, it is a wine to drink during its first decade of life. It is a sleeper of the vintage as well as a superb value. Rated 89-91 Robert Parker

Located in the center of Saint-Laurent-des-Combes, 3 kilometres from Saint-Emilion, Château Pipeau is thirty hectares of very well-exposed vineyard.

The parcels of vines, growing mostly round the Chateau, come under the communes of Saint-Laurent-des-Combes, Saint-Hippolyte and Saint-Emilion. This vineyard has remained exclusively a family concern since 1929.

Thus, three generations of wine-producers have passed down their inherited savoir-faire. Today it is the children of Monsieur Pierre Mestreguilhem, Richard and Dominique who run the vineyard.

This Saint-Emilion is a fine velvety color, has plenty of body yet maintains great suppleness, and is perfect for ageing.

This wine estate has remained exclusively a family property since 1929 and three generations of vintners have continued to hand down their ancestral savoir-faire. At the present time it is managed by Pierre Mestreguilhem's children, his son Richard and his daughter Dominique. Château Pipeau lies at the center of Saint-Laurent-des-Combes and commands a vineyard of about 35 hectares. The vineyard is divided between the communes of Saint-Laurent-des-Combes, Saint-Hippolyte and Saint-Emilion. It benefits from varied soils, partly clayey-limestone or clayey-siliceous soil and partly gravel, especially the parts that are in Saint-Emilion itself.

Thanks to a well-chosen range of grape varieties and winemaking which remains in the oure tradition of Saint-Emilion vintners, the wines from this growth are generally soft and mellow. Like all the Saint-Emilion grand crus, the wines of Château Pipeau are sold exclusively château bottled.
