St Emilion Bordeaux

A fabulous offering from Christine Valette, who has been producing great St.-Emilions since the late eighties, the 2000 boasts a thick, opaque blue/purple color as well as highly-extracted notes of blackberry and cassis fruit, minerals, espresso beans, and vanilla. It is dense and full-bodied, with high tannin, good acidity, and laser-like clarity/definition. The immense mid-palate and huge finish are formidably constructed and muscular. While this wine will age gracefully, patience is required. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2025. This is a classic, old style vin de garde with modern-styled tannin. Rated 93-94 Robert Parker

Serious wine. This is gorgeous, with spice, mineral and berry galore on the nose. Full-bodied, with serious concentration and loads of silky, mineral character at the end. Almost classic. Super effort from Troplong. Score range: 92-94 Wine Spectator

Château Troplong-Mondot is one of the biggest and most famous Grand Crus Classés in Saint-Emilion. Surrounding the château, 30 hectares of vines extend as far as the top of an exceptionally fertile hill, opposite the medieval town of Saint-Emilion itself. In the 17th century, the Séze family developed the renown of Mondot. Its most illustrious member, Romain de Séze, was Louis XVI's defender. Later it belonged to a learned jurisconsult, president of the Imperial Senate, Troplong, whose name the estate perpetuates. His nephew, Edouard Troplong, added his name before selling the estate. A wine merchant in Paris, Alexandre Valette, became the owner. Ever since that time, the Valette family has remained faithful to Troplong-Mondot and today Alexander's great granddaughter has taken over complete management of the estate. The vintage is entirely hand picked and the grapes stemmed. All the stainless-steel vats are equipped with a temperature control system and aging is done in oak barrels, half of them renewed each year. The wine is racked every three months and before bottling the wine is clarified by fining with egg white. Château Troplong-Mondot produces about 110 tunsx each year and this enables the growth to maintain its reputation worldwide.
