The Reverend, the second member of Avery's Holy Trinity, was created in tribute to the life of brewer/sales head Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained some of the same sterling traits that his grandfather had possessed. Adam listened to a description of these traits & devised the recipe for The Reverend Belgian Quadrupel Ale. True to both Avery's "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy & to the spirit & character of the departed Reverend, The Reverend is "strong willed, assertive, & pure of heart-a heart of candy sugar." It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into Avery's mash tun, & 165 lbs of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle; truly a confectioner's dream.
An authentic Belgian yeast strain ferments this sweet, deep-copper colored concoction down to produce the 10%+ ABV that perfectly balances the sweetness imparted by the Belgian candy sugar. What originated as a one time only tribute brew quickly attained the same microbrew cult status as Hog Heaven.
