Climate and Vintage: A cold winter has slowed the budding. In the spring, flowering and growth has been normal. Thinning of the grapes carried out in July (up to 50% in some Merlotˇ¦s vineyards). The Merlot was harvested in Septemberˇ¦s first half. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc from middle September to beginning of October. The grapes, well and uniformely ripen, have been hand picked and carried in 30 lb. bins. Excellent Cabernet Sauvignon.
Wine Making and Aging: Fermentation part in large oak casks, part in stainless steel, with temperatures < 30 degrees C. Macerated for 25 days, than transferred in French barriques (60% new) to conclude the malolactic fermentation. Each grape variety and every parcel is vinified separately. The single varieties have been blended after the first 12 months of aging in barriques, than the wine has completed its aging with further 6 months in barriques, and 1 year in the bottle.
Tasting Notes: Ornellaia 99 is a three dimensional wine whose principle axis is, without doubt, its depth. The structure of the wine is endless creating an incredible sensation of length. This vintage is still somewhat closed; we must be patient, and leave time for this wine to demonstrate its full potential.
