Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz 2000
Created by the legendary Max Schubert - creator of Penfolds Grange - Bin
389 is often referred to as 'poor man's Grange' ('baby Grange' in the U.S.)
because components of the wine are matured in the same barrels that held
the previous year's Grange.
First made in 1960, this was the wine that built Penfolds' solid reputation with
red wine drinkers. Combining the structure of Cabernet with the richness of
Shiraz, Bin 389 also exemplifies Penfolds' skill in balancing fruit and oak. A
classic Australian style with a clear Penfolds identity
Vintage Conditions
McLaren Vale produced solid, rich shiraz with genuine regional character
whilst Padthaway was fortunate to miss most of the rainfall of further north.
Coonawarra had a cool spring with rain at Christmas/New Year followed by
very dry, hot conditions. Despite challenging conditions in the Barossa,
some excellent shiraz was produced showing the district's hallmark
sweetness and ripe tannin structure.
Grape Variety - Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz (Syrah)
Color - Deep crimson red.
Nose - Sweet, ripe berried fruits (blackberry) at once immediate. Closer inspection reveals a background of chocolate and
liquorice melded with smokey oak.
Palate - A defined fruit focus - ripe berry with spice with excellent
trademark oak integration. Tannins are similarly ripe, and at one with the wine. Undoubtedly this wine has benefited from the inclusion of relegated Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon from this vintage. Imminently drinkable.
