Icon Sauvignon Blanc has achieved multi award winning status with every vintage
since its launch in 1997. Most recently the 2004 release was awarded double gold
and the trophy for Best White Wine at the 2005 San Francisco International Wine
Competition. The Icon series represents the culmination of years of research into
specific viticultural techniques, particular attention to vineyard sites and a
winemaking strategy focused on fruit structure and balance. Vineyard sites, long
proven in Marlborough were selected and monitored through out the growing season,
specifically for this blend. Several canopy training systems were utilised to produce a
complex array of aromas and flavours, with close attention paid to sunlight
penetration of the canopy and soil moisture levels in the achievement of optimum
ripening.
Cool but generally sunny weather from February through to April ensured a
slow ripening period, ideal for developing and retaining the critical flavour
compounds that make Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc so unique. The grapes
were harvested with excellent flavour profiles and balanced sugar and acid
levels. After crushing some batches of juice received a small amount of skin contact,
to aid in the extraction of flavours. Fermentation was cool and prolonged, utilising a
variety of yeasts to achieve further complexity of aromas and flavours. Post
fermentation, the wine was aged on yeast lees for 4 - 6 weeks prior to racking. The
wine was cold stabilized, fined and sterile filtered before bottling.
Colour: Pale lemon in colour with green tints and brilliant clarity.
Nose: A concentrated bouquet of pineapple, gooseberry and nettles.
Palate: Icon Sauvignon Blanc is a complex, powerful wine, with excellent structure and palate weight. Displaying distinct Marlborough characters of pineapple, grapefruit and
nettles, this wine has a smooth, viscous mouth feel with a refreshing balance of tangy acidity and natural grape sugars.
