“One of California’s first serious Rhone Ranger blends was Bonny Doon’s Le Cigare Volant, a whimsical take-off on Chateauneuf du Pape. A blend of 34% Grenache, 33% Syrah, 27% Mourvedre, 2% Viognier, 2% Cinsault, and 2% Carignan, the 2001 Le Cigare Volant exhibits a classic kiss of kirsch liqueur intermixed with licorice, balsam wood, and subtle herbs. An easy-going, medium-bodied, light, fragrant, seductive red, it should be consumed over the next 2-3 years. By the way, two early vintages (1984 and 1985) are still holding up, but they were (and remain) much more concentrated than recent versions.” – Rated 87, Robert Parker
