Some of the best Shiraz comes from the Barossa Valley in the south of Australia. Barossa Valley Estate is found here and they started off in 1985 as a cooperative of grape growers that wanted to harvest more value from their grapes by making wine. Nice move and they make very fine wines, many of them pushing into the upper tier of Australian wines. This Spires Shiraz fits more in the ready-to-go, easy-to-drink, and not-so-dear category. It has rich aromas of cherries, spice, pepper, and vanilla oak. It’s nicely balanced with healthy and ripe flavors of black cherries, black pepper to spice it up, and then calmed by touches of oak vanilla. This is nicely balanced but not big on complexity. It gets along well with food and won’t get into arguments with anyone, profound ones at least. However, the finish is more of a short snap of the fingers that leaves one looking over their shoulder to see where it went.
