Kumala's 2004 South African Chardonnay begins with upfront citrus aromas and a hint of vanilla. On the palate stone and tropical fruit flavors are well balanced. The wine's crisp acidity is refreshing and enhances the bright lemon and toast flavors that persist on the finish.
Winemaking: The wines are fermented around 55 degrees F in stainless steel for two weeks. All the wine underwent malolactic fermentation. Twenty percent of the wine aged in new oak barrels, which contributed toast notes; the remaining wine aged in stainless steel to preserve vibrant fruit aromas and flavors. The wine was cold stabilized, fined, and filtered prior to bottling.
