"Composed of 89% Zinfandel and 11% mixed blacks, the dense purple-hued 2009 Zinfandel Montafi Ranch (a vineyard planted in 1926) is phenomenal. Dark, jammy black raspberry notes intermixed with sweet black cherries, blackberries, licorice, charcoal and underbrush are present in this complex, full-bodied, massive yet impressively well-balanced offering. It will drink exceptionally well for 7-8 years.

"(15.3% alcohol): Inky purple. Highly complex aromas of black raspberry, candied cherry, dried rose and pungent herbs. Expansive, supple red and dark fruit preserve flavors show serious heft but are finely etched and braced by tangy minerality. Quite suave and pliant, with excellent finishing cut and length. This impeccably balanced wine is from 83-year-old vines, according to Officer, including an 11% mix of alicante bouschet, grand noir, petite sirah, peloursin, bastardo and "who knows what else."" -Rated 94, Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
