Bud break came early in 2004, beginning the first week of March, and unusually warm spring weather led to a growing season unlike any in recent memory. Temperatures in the 80s in March and April kicked off the growing season three weeks earlier than normal. This dry, warm weather continued into July, when we saw heat spikes in the high 90s. Their earliest in memory, the 2004 harvest began in late August. They began picking Merlot beginning September 20th.
This 2004 Carneros Merlot is beautifully balanced and rich, a testament to their Carneros estate fruit. Aromas of cassis and roasted coffee beans are followed by toasty oak, black cherry and sweet vanilla. Flavors arrive in layers of cassis fruit, leather and tobacco, and are complemented on the palate by opulent tannins. This versatile wine pairs well with many dishes, including roasted tomato-sauce on pasta, rack of lamb or herb roasted chicken. It is equally delicious paired with a cheese course featuring aged Gouda or a tangy blue cheese like Point Reyes.
