Brandy
All brandies come from distilled wines. Brandy can come from either the distillate of grape wine, or from any fermented fruit. The word Brandycomes from the Dutch word brandewijn, meaning, burnt wine. It was introduced to Northern Europe from France and Spain by Dutch traders in the 16th century. They described it as wine that had been burnt,or boiled in order to distill it.
Armagnac is produced in the Gascony region of France, whilest the more well known region, Cognac is in north-west France. Brandy is also produce in other countries such as German, Spain, and Greece. A unique type of Brandy is produced in Italy, Grappa is not made from wine itself, it is produced from grape skins, stems, and seeds.
Brandy can also be produced from Fruits. The Normandy region of France produces Calvados, a brandy made from apples. An Eastern European speciality produced from plums is called Slivovitz. Other fruits used are Pears, Raspberries, and Cherries.
