Tequila is the native drink of Mexico. Distilled from the Weber Blue Agave plant. Most of the Agaves plants are grown in the Jalisco area of Mexico, although four other regions are allowed to be used in Tequila production. This area surrounds the town of Guadalajara and stretches to the Bay of Banderas at the town of Puerto Vallarta.
Tequila is made into 4 main categories. The Mixtoare tequila (minimum 51% agave) that is blended with cane spirits. These are usually the cheaper brands. They are primarily used for mixed drinks and the flavored brands. The Blancoor Silver Tequilas are bottled within 30 days of distillation. Most are actually bottled without any ageing. The Reposado is aged a minimum of 3 months in wooden casks. The Anejo is aged for a minimum of 1 year in the casks. For tequilas to be called "Agave" or "Blue Agave", the product must be 100% agave. Mezcal is closely related to Tequila but it is produced inthe Oaxaca region and it used the Maquey Agave as it's main ingredient. |
