Alexander Valley Vineyards 2 Barrel 2005
There are folks who like a velvety, lush Merlot. And then there are those who prefer the gumption of a Syrah. For each, Alexander Valley Vineyards offers Two Barrel, a wine that blends the best of both in perfect harmony. Two Barrel was originally inspired by their Wine Club. Each spring,...
The 2005 harvest was distinguished by the long hang time on the vines. The wine has completed fermentation and is ageing gracefully in French oak. According to Heidi Barrett, the 2005 harvest delivered some of the most 'lush fruit' she has ever worked with. Amuse Bouche anticipates another wine of power...
Archipel is the French word for Archipelago, a string of islands rising above the sea, and that meaning is carried over to the sourcing of fruit for the new Archipel wine, a Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. For this limited production wine, world acclaimed winemaker Pierre Seillan...
Arietta Red Wine H Block Hudson Vineyard 2000
The 2000 Arietta (equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Franc) tastes like an over-sized, phenomenal Cheval Blanc. It has blossomed beautifully since I tasted it last year. A dense purple color is followed by scents of cocoa, underbrush, chocolaty black cherry and black currant fruit, minerals, truffles, and graphite. A big, thick, chewy, tremendously long, intense, well-balanced red, I would love to taste it alongside the 2000 Cheval Blanc. It should hit its prime in 3-4 years, and last for two decades. There are approximately 800 cases. Winemaker and part owner, John Kongsgaard, produces these wines in partnership with auctioneer, Fritz Hatton. They are all fashioned from fruit grown in the “H Block” of the Hudson Vineyard, the highest point on that large ranch. The vineyard is planted in white volcanic ash-dominated soils. The Cabernet Franc/Merlot blend is the Arietta and the Syrah/Merlot blend is named Variation One. These striking offerings have a European sensitivity for elegance, structure, and delineation, but are clearly products of California, as evidenced by their prodigious ripeness as well as intensity. They are expensive, but impressive efforts that should be long-lived. - Rated 96, Robert Parker
The first vintage for this revolutionary blend of Merlot (70%) and Syrah (30%). Winemaker John Kongsgaard experimented with blending Merlot with Syrah beginning in the 1996 vintage, and liked the complexity gained by adding the wild, leathery, gamy, and floral qualities of Syrah to the luscious, more fruit-driven flavors of Merlot....

Beringer Alluvium Blanc is a blend of sémillion, muscat, sauvignon blanc, and chardonnay. It has a citus nose with notes of flowers. On the palate there is a fig, roasted macademia nut, apricot, and mineral presence. It has a lushious mouthfeel with a nice acidic snap.
Another break-out hit for the recidivist partisans of this eclectic pan-Mediterranean blend. The varietal mix was altered just a tad this year and introduced a substantial amount of cabernet franc into the concoction. Big House Red is all about fragrance, spice and soft tannins. It has a fragrance of mint and...
Each variety selected for this blend brings its individual characters and distinct personality: spiciness from the Syrah, cherry and raspberries from the Sangiovese and Barbera, blueberries from the Tannat, cassis from the Grenache and chocolate from Mourvèdre. A wonderful mix of the best each variety has to offer. The co-fermentation of...

This is a full bodied Syrah, forceful; perhaps even a bit dangerous” dare I say (that’s why he’s locked up in solitary). Muscular and deeply concentrated this wine has a nose of sweet black berry jam and hints of dark chocolates. Balanced and well structured, it bodes a well rounded mouthfeel...
Big House the Lineup Red Wine 2006
GSM is a colloquial and friendly name attached to that venerable style developed within spitting distance from the Pope’s French incarceration camp (it was actually a palace, but hey he’s the Pope) in Avignon. While the Central Coast has many micro-climates, some are very similar to the Southern Rhone valley. Each...
The time is here to start looking over your shoulder… Three unique varietals combine lush berry and fierce spice into a wine characterized by its incandescence. Brighter fruit and brighter spice highlight this vintage of the deep ruby apparition. Aromas of plums and cherries are embraced by touches of black pepper....
Bonny Doon Le Cigare Volant 2001 1.5L
One of California’s first serious Rhone Ranger blends was Bonny Doon’s Le Cigare Volant, a whimsical take-off on Chateauneuf du Pape. A blend of 34% Grenache, 33% Syrah, 27% Mourvedre, 2% Viognier, 2% Cinsault, and 2% Carignan, the 2001 Le Cigare Volant exhibits a classic kiss of kirsch liqueur intermixed with...

The classic Rhône varietals of 83% Viognier, 16% Roussanne, and 1% Marsanne fuse together to produce bright, tantalizing aromas of amazing cantaloupe, peach and apricot with almond and a twist of pineapple which leap from the glass. Thick layers of peach pineapple and toasted almonds envelope the mouth, echoing for what...
This blend of grapes native to France’s southern Rhone, but grown on the Central Coast, is an excellent example of what California can produce in this style. Grenache (39%) and Mourvèdre (30%) comprise most of the wine, with lesser percentages of Cinsault (17), Syrah (11), Viognier (2) and Counoise (1). Easy-to-drink,...
Reminiscent of blackberry jam in its deep dark berry appearance, this wine offered the panel strong aromatic hints of raisin, fig, dried mushrooms, and black pepper that seemed to leap out of the glass. The tannins were smooth but firm, possessing a fruit stand of blackberries, rich dark cherry, black plum...

2005 gaqve Cain plent of hang time” to allow the grapes to ripen gently. Unlike the yields on the valley floor, their yields in the Cain Vineyars were typically low. This is their most restrained wine since 1999. The cool weather on Spriong Mount preserves the firmness of the tannins and...
At Cardinale they christened this the vintage of Alice's Rabbit”, in that everything was very late. Their rainy season slowed down enough in March to initiate bud push but was followed by the return of the rains not long after, which delayed bloom and fruit set. Already looking at a later...

Rosenblum Cellars Chateau La Paws Côte du Bone Blanc
This lovely wine shows refreshing pear, melon and mango in the bouquet, followed by flavors of apple, peach and creamy vanilla. This is an ideal wine paired with seafood, including oysters on the half shell and curried Dungeness crab.

This lovely Northern Rhône style wine is fruit-forward and driven by elegance and a soft mouth feel. The bouquet shows ripe cherries with hints of strawberries, rose petal and violets. The flavors are cherry cola with elements of wild herbs and smoked bacon.
Chateau St Jean Cinq Cepages 99
While the 13,000-case cuvee of 1999 Cinq Cepages (76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, 4% Malbec, and 2% Petit Verdot) is not as prodigious as the 1997 or 1996, it is potentially outstanding. This New World version of a high class St.-Emilion boasts an opaque ruby/purple color in addition to a sweet bouquet of licorice, dried herbs, tobacco, smoke, black cherries, and cassis. It is medium to full-bodied, with a lovely texture, admirable complexity, and a long finish. The question mark relates to the notion of elevated, dry tannin in the finish. My instincts suggest this characteristic will age out given the wine's overall concentration and intensity. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2015. - Rated 90, Robert Parker Gorgeous Cabernet, offering a mix of ripe, rich, fleshy currant and blackberry fruit, with hints of herb, olive and sage. Finishes with a firm, structured backbone and ripe tannins giving it depth and richness. Drink now through 2014. 13,000 cases made. –JL - Rated 95, Wine Spectator

Rich and medium to full-bodied, with sweet but noticeable tannin, a layered mid-palate, and a long finish with obvious tannin, it will require 3-4 years of cellaring. It should last for two decades. - Rated 95, Robert Parker
Edmunds St John Rocks & Gravel 2005
Lovely dark ruby red with a little blue. Deep, very fresh nose of strawberry, sassafras, and underbrush, and the slightest whiff of menthol: very spicy. The 1999 Isosceles (an unfiltered blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 17% Merlot) reveals copious quantities of earthy black currant, fig, and charcoal-infused fruit with a touch of new oak in the background. Full-bodied, with plenty of muscle as well as depth, it has a similar weight, but less complexity than the Reserve bottling. Rains in August were followed by dry, windy weather in September that protected Napa Valley's red varieties from exposure to rot. A greatly reduced crop level produced lean, well-balanced wines for medium-term aging.
Erratic temperatures throughout the first few months of the season caused some shatter in the grape flowers and uneven rates of maturation. The resulting smaller crop and smaller berry size yielded tannic, full-bodied wines of significant potential. A very complete wine from a challenging vintage. Medium weight, with cherry, herb, tea and coffee notes, finishing with mellow tannins.--Opus One vertical. Drink now through 2003. 14,500 cases made. –JL - Rated 86, Wine Spectator While the best Opus One to date is the 1987, the 1988 is certainly one of the finest red wines I have tasted from this uninspiring vintage. Impressively dark ruby-colored, it reveals an attractive nose of currants and smoky new oak. In the mouth, the wine is medium-bodied, with excellent concentration, a velvety texture, soft tannins, low acidity, and a smooth, attractive finish. Although it is hard to resist now, it should age gracefully for 7-8 years. - Rated 88, Robert Parker
The harvest of 2003 began on September 17th and concluded on November 2nd, the day before the start of heavy autumn rains. A moderately deep garnet, the 2003 Opus One offers aromas of blackberry, plum, hazelnut, graphite, olive oil, cocoa and dried cherries. The wine presents a soft, rich entry; nuances...
